Soon, they began to design and create aerial cameras during World War II, and pioneered the first Japanese 35mm SLR camera, which included a cloth curtain focal plain shutter, a bulb setting, and amazing shutters speeds of 1/20 to 1/500 a second.

Once these cameras were sold in the United States, the new trade name of "Pentax" became a household name. This unique name was created using the words "Pentaprism" and "Reflex" together. This name was made to reflect the incredible invention of eye-level viewfinder viewing (introduced in the Asahi Pentax model in 1957) which became the design norm for SLR cameras ever since.
