Ear Plugs
Wax Ear PlugsThe first wax ear plugs were invented in ancient times. Amazingly, little has changed since. Wax is still used, along with fibrous materials such as cotton, to produce high quality hearing protection devices. One of the strengths of using wax in earplug manufacturing is that once inside the ear, the wax slightly heats up. The rise in temperature, caused by the normal body temperature of a human being, means the wax can form a protective seal with the skin inside the ear canal. The seal insures that unwanted noise, water, or anything else stays out of the inner ear. Wax ear plugs are also great for flying. The seal that the wax forms with the ear allows the air pressure in the inner ear enough time to equalize with the outside air pressure. Most often, the discomfort in your ears during takeoff results from the inner ear not being able to keep with the quickly changing air pressure in the cabin. With a wax seal firmly in place, air is prevented from rushing in through your ear and causing that familiar discomfort. Wax Ear Plugs Vs. Silicon Ear PlugsSilicon earplugs were invented in the early sixties to guard against swimmer's ear infections. Nowadays, though, earplugs manufactured with wax can also be waterproof and insoluble in water. Experimentation can help you find what works best for you. ![]() Get all Hearing articles via
