Wind Deflectors

by James Lyons

Wind deflectors funnel oncoming air up and over your vehicle to improve towing stability and fuel efficiency. Good wind deflectors will decrease air drag by thirty percent or more and are easy to adjust. Towing a 5th wheel rig or a travel trailer put a good bit of strain on the tow vehicle. A wind deflector helps keeps things steady.

This might not seem essential, but, believe me, it is a crucial safety device. Trekking across the Midwest any time of the year can be treacherous with the open plains and the high winds. Towing a rig of several thousand pounds makes things a little unsteady. Add 30 mile per hour winds, and things get pretty interesting. Think twice about passing on a wind deflector.

Practice Driving with and without Your Wind Deflectors

Before you buy and RV or a travel trailer you should take some things into account. First of all, if you plan on purchasing or renting a trailer, you should understand that towing a rig takes practice and patience. Additionally, trailers tend to maintain their value better than motorhomes because there is no engine to wear down. Finally, equipping your tow vehicle with a proper hitch costs money, from two hundred to six hundred dollars.

In addition, there are several other RV books you might take a look at when you have some spare time. Most bookstores have a travel section and automotive section where you can find books on RVing and camping. Some bookstores keep these books in different sections, so don't be shy and ask where they stack their RV books. If you don't like traveling to bookstores, get online and buy a book from an online RV store.
