Shingles Disease Symptoms

by Kevin Little

Shingles disease symptoms are birds of a feather to another common ailment, namely chicken pox. As in the case of chicken pox, shingles will manifest itself over the course of a couple of weeks, ending only when it feels it's time. For most people, this time can't arrive soon enough, as the itching and pain of shingles can make it hard to concentrate on anything else.

Shingles disease symptoms appear most often in the elderly, and there's at least one underlying cause for this. Singles will not develop in those who have not had chicken pox. While shingles is contagious, it is only so to people who have not experienced chicken pox, and such people will contract chicken pox instead of shingles.

Shingles Disease Symptoms: Easing the Pain

While there is no way to get rid of shingles other than waiting it out, there are methods of reducing the intensity of the symptoms. In mild cases, taking over the counter pain relievers can be a big help, as can applying cool compresses. You might also want to look into a newer treatment for shingles in the form of dietary supplements.

Supplements that give the body an easy to use form of vitamin B-1, such as benfotiamine, can do a lot to ratchet the levels of pain down a few notches. These supplements have received more and more testing and use of late, and have been approved by the FDA. In more severe cases, only painkillers may be able to reduce the discomfort of shingles to manageable levels.
