Basketball Goal

by Jeremy Horelick

A basketball goal is a relatively simple addition you can make to your home that will yield benefits you'd never dreamed of. Most homeowners look to purchase housewares that will improve the resale value of their property. But the hours and hours of spirited fun and exercise you and your family get from a home hoop are far more valuable than any guest house or garage you're thinking of adding.

There are almost as many basketball hoops as there are garages, car ports, and walls to which they're attached. Every neighborhood in America is home to at least one or two basketball courts, be they full-sized school-yard blacktops or stand-alone tattered double-rims with chewed netting and no real backboard to speak of. In either case, all it takes a ball and a surface on which to bounce it for the games to begin. For that matter, you don't even need a dribbling surface for shooting games such as HORSE.

Deluxe Basketball Goals

If you've got the real estate to accommodate, you may even consider upgrading to a deluxe hoop with break-away hinges for overzealous dunkers and a glass shatter-proof backboard. These packages can easily run anywhere from 500 to 1000 dollars, however, and do require some assembly and installation. Remember, a professional basketball goal is 10 feet high, so even after you're done building you'll probably have to drag out a ladder as well.

If your exercise bike and treadmill have been lying untouched for months or even years, it may because you find an indoor workout tedious or monotonous. Building a mini basketball court might inspire you to resuscitate your exercise regimen or, at the very least, dust off your old high tops. Plus it's a great way to enjoy time with your son or daughter, who will appreciate the effort you put forth, even if he or she isn't the next Michael Jordan (or Sheryl Swoopes).
