Garden Pond Waterfall Design

by Michael O'Brien

There are several key factors to be aware of in a garden pond waterfall design. The most important of these is size. A water fall should be no taller than 2 feet. This will create for a nice, peaceful cascade, without creating a harmful torrent.

Garden Pond Waterfall Design Necessities

The reason why a garden pond waterfall design should be smaller rather than larger is to minimize the disruption of the water to the pond itself. If the water falling into the pond is too strong, it will be harmful to the fish and will uproot the plants. The water should flow downwards in more of a gently sloping trickle.

Another important factor is the pump. It should be placed as close to the base of the waterfall as possible so that it only collects and re-circulates the water and not leaves and other debris that could clog things up. Adding a biological filter to the pump will also help to further aid in water filtration.

Speaking of Filters ...

The advantage of a waterfall is that it does indeed act as a natural filter. The flowing water keeps the pond more pure and helps in oxygenation. Again, as long as it is not disruptive, a gentle flow of water from a nice, modestly sized waterfall will add a touch of health and beauty to a fish pond.
