Induction Equipment

by Patricia Tunstall

Because induction equipment uses electricity and magnetism, it is relatively compact. No spacious furnaces or ovens are needed; in fact, an induction heater can be as small as a bench model for soldering and brazing. Induction equipment is a real space-saver. By reducing the necessary floor space, and by foregoing costly fuel-burning processes, induction equipment saves on capital investment.

Daily Savings

Economy is characteristic of any induction equipment, whether designed for manual soldering by one operator or used in steel plants to produce high-quality steel pipe. Consistent heating of part after part creates an efficient production process. Immediate internal heating of a workpiece to a desired temperature increases production of parts with fewer rejects and less scrap than other processes.

Versatility of Induction Equipment

The range of sizes, power, and frequency of induction equipment make it ideal for advanced steel plants and essential for finely-tuned operations. The inherent tight control of induction heat treating is ideal for making eyeglass frames and tiny parts in electronics. The higher frequencies of some induction power supplies allow for the delicate, shallow penetration of thinner materials or workpieces, known as skin-effect heating.

An important advantage of induction equipment is the possibility of separating the power supply from the heat station. Remote heat stations permit optimum arrangement of the system within a designated space. Power supplies vary depending on the purpose of the equipment: 1.0 kW, 600 kW, 1100 kW, for instance. Frequencies, again depending on the use, can be low or high, say, 30 or 1100 kHz. The ultimate versatility lies in the capacity of the equipment to be customized according to usage.
