Home Gym Equipment

by Jill Morrison

Home gym equipment can help you to tone and strengthen your body so you will look and feel more physically fit. Most of the equipment that you see in fitness clubs can also be purchased for your home. You will only have to worry about what will fit into your budget, the amount of room space you have to spare, and also what equipment will work best for your body type and level of strength.

By purchasing home gym equipment, you will save time and money that you would normally spend on a gym membership. It is much more enjoyable to workout at home because you are in a safe, comfortable and private environment. You can purchase home gym equipment from Exercise equipment stores or catalogs, but the best deals are often found online. Shopping online is also much more convenient and your equipment can be sent directly to your home.

Types of Home Gym Equipment

The two major types of home gym equipment are cardio machines and strength training equipment. Cardio machines are beneficial in building endurance, improving the health of your heart, and for losing weight. Cardio machines include stationary bikes, ellipticals, rowing machines, steppers, and treadmills.

Strength training machines and equipment will help you to develop stronger muscles, lose inches, and to look more muscular or toned. Some examples of strength training machines include hip leg sleds, lat machines, leg press machines, inversion tables, abdominal machines, and bench press machines. Strength training equipment includes dumbbells, barbells, knee raises, squat racks, and weight plates.

You can purchase machines or home gym equipment that focuses on specific muscle groups or areas of the body. For instance, a leg press will work lower body and leg muscles, and dumbbells will work upper body and arm muscles. Some people like to purchase various individual machines if they have a space designated as a workout room.

Home Gym Machines

If you do not have much space to spare in your home, but would like to receive the benefits from using machines, you can purchase a home gym. A home gym combines the functions of many different machines into one unit so you will receive a total body workout. Home gyms are designed to either fit in the center or corner of a room. The corner design is generally more space efficient.

There are many different home gym systems available, but Body Solid and BodyCraft manufacture the highest quality of models. The Body Solid Home Gym targets six different muscle groups. It comes with accessories such as a lat bar, straight bar, utility strap, and workout poster. BodyCraft home gyms such as the Strata and Galena are designed for individual home use and the BodyCraft Family Xpress can be used by more than one person at a time, so it is appropriate for large families.

Accessories to Home Gym Equipment

There are many accessories you can purchase to compliment your home gym equipment. In weightlifting, accessories include gloves, belts, knee wraps, head harnesses, ab straps, wrist wraps, ankle straps, and padded lifting straps which can be used for comfort and safety in weight training. Other accessories to consider are fitness and equipment mats, and the different types of racks for holding weight equipment. You can purchase weight trees to hold Olympic weights or dumbbell racks to hold your set of dumbbells that match the decor of your room and fit well within the space you have.
