Weightlifting Bars

by Jill Morrison

Weightlifting bars can be used for a variety of strength training exercises. Beginners or those with a low level of strength can use the bar itself for exercises. For intermediate and advanced strength training, weight plates may be added to the bar so exercises are more challenging.

Options in Weightlifting Bars

Weightlifting bars are available in different sizes, shapes, and designs. They are designed differently so you can perform exercises that will strengthen certain muscle groups. For instance, you can purchase a regular or Olympic curl bar to perform various types of curls. But, a regular or Olympic style tricep bar will allow you to focus primarily on your tricep muscles.

Most weightlifting bars are available in chrome or black. They are sold in various sizes, from a 14" dumbbell handle to a 7' Olympic bar. You can find them in exercise equipment stores or catalogs. However, you will likely find the best prices online and it will also be more convenient to purchase equipment online.

You should match your weightlifting bar selection with the proper size of collar when purchasing. You have the option of purchasing an Olympic muscle clamp collar, a metal Quicklee Olympic collar, or an Olympic spring collar for your Olympic weight bar. For regular weight bars, you can choose from a regular Quicklee plastic collar, a regular EZ on spring collar, or a regular style muscle clamp collar.
