Ultraviolet Sterilizer

by Patricia Skinner

Got Green Water?

If you have been having trouble with green water despite a good bio pond filter and water features, you may need to get an ultraviolet sterilizer for your backyard pond. Ultraviolet light can kill most microorganisms and render water bright, clear and sparkling in no time. So don't let green water spoil your view and make your fish sick when the answer is as simple and inexpensive as an ultraviolet sterilizer.

The type of ultraviolet sterilizer you use for your garden pond will not be the same as the model you use in conjunction with your kitchen water purifier. The pond ultraviolet sterilizer is, of course, much larger, and is constructed to allow for underwater use. Whereas pumps can sometimes be positioned outside of the pond, an ultraviolet sterilizer always needs to be in the water to work.

Choosing an Ultraviolet Sterilizer

However, you need to make sure that all the water in your pond is passed through the ultraviolet sterilizer to ensure maximum effectiveness against pathogens and parasites. Remember that, like any light bulb, the lamp on your ultraviolet sterilizer will need replacing from time to time. It's worth enquiring about the cost of replacements before you buy your model as they do vary quite dramatically.

You will also need to make sure that the ultraviolet sterilizer you buy actually generates enough ultra violet to be effective in killing the pathogens you are using it for. Some of them are just not strong enough. For those of you who want specifics, you bulb will have to be able to handle 30,000 µWs/cm2. This is the recommended exposure rate for common bacteria and waterborne algae.
