Healthy Cat Diet

by Kathleen Gagne

What Makes a Healthy Cat Diet?

It may surprise you to know that cats need more meat protein in their diets than dogs. They also need a balanced diet that includes the protein, some carbohydrates, fats, and added vitamins and minerals. It's also very important for cats to get the right amount of water. If you have a cat that rarely drinks from her water dish, it is even more critical to ensure that she gets water in moist food.

Many veterinarians recommend a combination of both dry and canned food for your cat. While most cats will eat their canned food as soon as it's offered, some do not. Leaving canned food out for long periods can result in a sick cat, so, if your cat is finicky, you should make dry food available throughout the day. You should be aware that otherwise healthy cats may refuse to eat for a day or two when they have any type of upset. This helps them to clean out their system. If your cat is not eating for a day or two and is not losing weight, make sure she has plenty of water, and don't worry.

Remember That Your Cat is a Carnivore

Cats cannot live without the protein that provides them with several essential amino acids that their liver turns into glucose for energy. Unlike most other mammals, a cat who doesn't get the protein she needs will soon start to metabolize her own muscles. Cats need Taurine, Arginine, and the form of Vitamin A found only in meats. It's important to look for foods that are made primarily of meat.

You can find several varieties of cat food that will provide her with a healthy cat diet when you shop on the Internet. Look for brands that include multiple sources of the high-quality meat protein cats need. Ingredients such as chicken meal, lamb meal, eggs, and herring meal are great sources of protein. Another quality ingredient to look for is grapeseed which provides a wide range of natural antioxidants for your cat. If you want to provide your best friend with a healthy cat diet, you will find dozens of options online at prices you can afford.
