Book Illustrators

When a large trade publishing company publishes your book, you often have little or no say over the illustrations that are included in the book. This is mainly because you have sold the rights to the book and the publishing company then has creative control. However, if you publish the book yourself, you can make all of the creative decisions, including those related to book illustrations.

Getting Illustrations for Your Self Published Book

If you have written a book that is in need of illustration, you needn't worry. There are a number of publishing companies that will provide access to book illustrators and graphic designers for a fee. You can commission the illustrations to be done as an additional service.

There are a number of different styles you can choose from when it comes to book illustrations. You can have a sketch done in graphite, a painting in watercolor or acrylic, or any other piece of art made in a variety of mediums. When you commission the piece, you retain the rights to the image so that should you wish to publish the book again with another company, you will be able to use the images.

If you are writing a children's book, this service is particularly useful. Practically all children's books have illustrations and they are an integral part of the genre. If you are planning on self publishing a children's book, you will need to either find a book illustrator or commission the work to be done by professionals employed by a publishing company.
