Bead Crafts

There's a whole lot more to working with beads than making jewelry. The field of bead crafts is wide and varied, ranging from tiny boxes covered with seed beads to magnificent wall hangings. Clothing, accessories and home decorations can all be adorned with beadwork to express your individual style.

Clothing and Accessories

Knitting and crocheting with beads can produce some striking clothing and accessories. Crochet an openwork Juliet cap in black, for instance, and sprinkle it with tiny iridescent glass beads. Knit a beaded collar to dress up a simple sweater, or make a vest with a beaded front that looks like a Persian carpet.

Purses, too, are wonderful beading projects. You can make tiny, elegant evening bags with seed pearls, or funky totes with a variety of wood and pottery beads. Or make small beaded motifs to attach to ready-made wallets, key cases, and other purse accessories. These make excellent gifts, as do other small crafts such as wine charms, boxes, and albums with beaded covers.

There is no end of bead craft ideas for home decoration. Fill a rough pottery jug with a bouquet of French beaded daylilies, roses, or spring flowers. Bead a lampshade, a picture frame, or a pillow. Make wind chimes from wire and beads, or ethereal Christmas ornaments from pearl and silver beads. You can embroider with beads on canvas to make large pieces such as wall hangings. Follow a needlepoint or hook latching pattern, or let your imagination roam free and paint your own picture with beads.
