New York City portrait photographers vary considerably with regard to both price and quality, and it takes some skill to balance these two considerations judiciously. You need to know what you're getting yourself into when you sign on for services, and in the city in particular, you need to be wary of scams. Hash out the details clearly at the fore and you will save yourself time, money, and heartache in the long run.

There are all sorts of scams that photographers will employ to get your business. Most notably, some freelancers have been known to withhold prints until additional payment has been provided and to refuse to hand over negatives. Although each photographer will employ different policies and practices, you want to know what you're getting yourself into at the outset.

Read the Contract

The best way to make sure you don't get duped is to go over the details point by point, and then make sure you have them in writing. Inquire about deposit and refund terms as well as details for canceling or rescheduling. In addition, ask about how and when photographs will be sent to you, who will choose them, and how many will be included in your package.

There is some controversy regarding whether or not to ask for wedding negatives, so don't be put off if a photographer tells you that he normally hangs on to them. Just make sure you know what the terms of the agreement are. The key to success in this arena rests with asking questions, obtaining a full understanding, and getting everything in writing.
