African American art is one of the most intelligent art investments anyone can make right now. Sales of prints and originals of African American artists are at an all time high. At a time when art collection is misperceived as a hobby only for the very rich, there is a brand new field of highly collectable art created by African American artists.

Collecting African American Art: Cause Celebre

Thanks to its unique combination of both European and African influences, African American art being examined in entirely new ways. Previously, (some would say criminally) ignored in comparison to art by other contemporaries, African American art is now being examined in critical discourse among collectors, critics, and art historians, giving it a previously unknown, considerably belated, and very well-deserved prestige.

Of course, what matters most is not how it compares to European and other world peers, but to what extent it communicates to the viewer. Collectively, the work of African American artists is not confined to any one genre or style. Within this broad term, there are historic and cultural influences from Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. In short, there is something for everyone.

In terms of buying originals, there are many still-affordable drawings and paintings available by established mid-career artists. With a little patience, discretion, and planning, fine originals from these artists can be in anyone's private collection. And of course, there are a wide variety of fine examples available in limited edition prints, lithographs and posters.
