Electronic Resumes

Given the fact that online job searching is now the most popular way to find listings, it should come as no surprise that electronic resumes are an increasingly important way to present yourself to possible employers. Most of the online employment sites offer free services for anyone looking for a job. All you have to do is create a user name and upload an electronic resume. Employers pay to use the service (or pay when they hire someone they found on the service), which is how the site makes money.

Hundreds of Companies Could View Your Electronic Resume

You never know who's going to be searching for interview candidates on a large employment search site. This may make it difficult to determine how to structure your electronic resume. When you're applying for a job, you can tailor your resume to the specific qualifications you know are necessary, and you get to write a cover letter and exercise the option of stating an objective which is in line with the nature of the job.

When you're posting an electronic resume that could be viewed by a number of different employers, things change a little bit. You want to be succinct, describing your education, experience, and skills in a format that's easy to absorb and shows that you would be suited to many different positions. If you have the opportunity to make a video resume, you want to keep the same quality of content, and also make sure that your final product looks professional and that you seem comfortable in it.

You should not become complacent just because you have put your electronic resume on a site where hundreds or thousands of employers are members. You still need to do frequent searches for job listings in which you have interest. You should have the option to send your resume to the contact person for any of those listings, and you must exercise this option. Don't hesitate to follow up with a phone call or personal email if you really want a job.
