When writing your resume, one thing that you should keep in mind is that the person reading your resume likely has a large stack of resumes on his desk. He is going to scan your resume for a couple of seconds and decide if you should receive an interview or be rejected. One consideration in writing your resume is to structure it in such a way as to maximize the chance that the first round reader will be interested in something and want to explore further the possibility of employing you in the future.

Tips for Holding Your Audience's Attention

To do this, you need to grab the reader's attention early on and hold it throughout your resume. Including buzz words like "results oriented" and "good communication skills" will not differentiate you, but will actually make you appear identical the rest of the candidates. If you truly want to stand out from the crowd, your resume should focus on what you have done for your previous employers. It should not condense the years of experience that you have into a few catch phrases.

The opening part of your resume should be focused and clearly state the type of position for which you are applying. These sections tend to be very fluffy and lack substance in many resume. To get your reader's attention, do not simply say something is a characteristic of yours, but rather show that your work demonstrates that about you. You should use this section to set up everything that will follow on the resume, showing that your experience and education are commensurate with your claims, and vice versa.

If you manage to get through the initial screening, prospective employers will take a closer look at your credentials. You should try to limit your resume to no more than two pages, omitting the earliest work experience if necessary. To ease the readability of the resume, stick to a simple font. When enumerating your responsibilities with previous employers, use bullet points to separate them and specific numbers, if possible, when referring to results that you have generated. These formatting tips will help you to create a clean and attractive resume that will best showcase your abilities.
