Before donating cash, time, goods or services to a charitable organization, it's a good idea to do a little research. One of the best ways to find information about local charities is to contact the Better Business Bureau in your area. If you want information about national non-profit or charitable organizations, the National Charity Report Index is also an amazing resource.

Researching National Charities

Before donating your hard-earned money to a national charity, it's a good idea to make sure it's legitimate. Believe it or not, some people rely on the established reputation of well-known charities for personal profits. If you're not sure if a charitable organization or program is legitimate, it's important to check with the National Charity Report Index for verification.

The National Charity Report Index provides a great deal of information about charities in the United States. You can find the official name of the charitable organization, as well as any affiliates or pseudonyms. You can also find out where the headquarters are located, the year the charity was founded, the names of board members, and a general mission statement for the charity.

However, not all charities are indexed here. If there is a charity that you are interested in, you should by all means research it. You should be able to call their headquarters for more information. Checking with the IRS regarding non-profit status is also a good idea.
