Donating household goods, clothing and electronics is a great way to give back to your community. Rather than dealing with the hassle of selling your items at a garage sale or storing your items in the basement, garage or attic, you can donate them to charity for a tax write-off. Many of the top charitable organizations offer free pickup service in every state in the country.

The Top Donation Programs

If you want to give back to your local community, you can find a number of charitable organizations willing to pick up goods directly from your home. The money from the sale of these goods goes directly back into your community. Many local programs provide food, housing and medical care for people in need in your community. For items such as clothing and furniture, it's often easiest to donate locally.

However, for bigger donations, such as cars and trucks to go to auction, many people are interested in donating internationally. Since only two percent of private donations from the United States go to other nations, contributions, even of a small amount, can make a large difference. Developing nations are often in most need of basic medical supplies and educational resources.

In order to have your vehicle picked up, you will need to work with an organization that has numerous branches in the U.S. Be sure to get a receipt at the time of the pickup. While you won't know what your donation (and therefore your tax deduction) is worth until the vehicle sells at auction, the receipt is a necessary record for tax purposes.
