IntercoolersWritten by Michael Federico Intercoolers are basically special types of radiators that can be installed into a vehicle that is going to endure unusually high engine inlet temperatures. The two most common uses for intercoolers are on racecars and large diesel trucks. Racing allows for extremely high boost pressures, and the majority of diesels haul heavy loads, while covering a lot of land in a very short time. Without an intercooler, vehicles in both of these situations could suffer damage or could simply give out on their drivers. Installing an intercooler is a proven way of increasing horsepower. When inlet temperatures are lowered, the charge of air that enters the engine will be denser. This means that a driver can now get more power without increasing his boost level. An intercooler is effective and it is safe. There are so many things that drivers do to their cars to increase speed and hp that can damage the vehicle and put the occupants at risk, but intercoolers are proven and they function like a standard part of an automobile. Nothing strange is introduced to the engine like in so many other cases. Linking Intercoolers to Turbo KitsThe majority of people who purchase an intercooler simply see it as one more part of their turbo kit. Problems arise, though, when people do not realize that an intercooler can’t be used with any old turbo kit. Two non-compatible parts will either simply not work together, or they can cause damage to the car. The majority of intercoolers fit with turbo kits that are produced by the same manufacturer. A distributor should be fully aware of what cars and kits his coolers can be paired with. In fact, they should be listed under every ad in which the product is featured.
