Other 383 engines are frequently compared with the ZZ 383, which has set the benchmark for power and performance among GM motors. The 383 takes advantage of Fast Burn cylinder heads that help generate impressive torque at at a low RPM for all the climbing and wrangling capabilities you could ask for. It's the Fast Burn's outstanding intake and combustion that give the ZZ 383 its appeal and makes the engine an industry leader in its class.

What's arguably most amazing is that all this power comes in a small block engine. If you're looking for big block capacity but don't want to spend thousands of extra dollars on a big block, the ZZ 383 is an excellent choice. And with its nearly 10:1 compression ratio, the 383 is still pump-friendly (provided you stick with higher octane fuels).

Is the ZZ 383 Right for You

In the world of automotive restoration, there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all crate engine. Some hobbyists are chiefly concerned with their street-rod's aesthetics and pump thousands of dollars into paint, wax, and clear coat. For these enthusiasts, an engine that's merely functional can suffice. Any performance capabilities are simply an added bonus.

For others, however, the joy of the hobby is in racing. These owners would rather skimp on looks and find an engine--like the 383--that emphasizes power and drivability. Before you go out and pump several thousand dollars into the "right" engine, it's important to consider how you plan to use your classic vehicle.
