Northern Virginia is home to Alexandria and Arlington. Alexandria, just across the Potomac River from Washington DC, is filled with charm and history. Founded in 1749, the old town here is lined with antique shops, taverns, and beautiful 18th and 19th century townhomes. Visit the boyhood home of Robert E. Lee or Christ Church, the parish of George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

Just south of Alexandria, also along the Potomac, is Mt. Vernon. This country estate was the home of George Washington and his family from 1761 until his death. This beautifully restored estate includes the main two-story house, the outbuildings (including the storehouse, kitchen, and servants quarters), the extensive gardens, and the burial site of George and Martha Washington. A new visitors center has an expansive gift shop, food court, and information on Mt. Vernon and the surrounding area. Adjacent to the visitor's center is the Mt. Vernon Inn, a restored 18th century home and a delightful place for a light lunch or a romantic dinner.

North of Alexandria, also on the Potomac River, is Arlington, Virginia. Arlington is a large commercial center as well as home to the national cemetery at Arlington. Formerly the estate of Robert E. Lee, this sweeping property is the final resting place of over 250,000 Americans, including past presidents (John F. Kennedy and William Taft), veterans (Admiral William Pershing), and other notables (boxer Joe Lewis and actor Lee Marvin). Arlington cemetery is also home to the United States tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Iwo Jima memorial. Arlington is also home to the Pentagon, the nation's defense headquarters. Over 23,000 people work at the Pentagon, the largest office building in the world.
