Baby Gyms

Baby gyms are one of the most popular items that parents purchase for their newborns (or that someone else will purchase as a gift for a baby shower). Though your baby might enjoy resting in his crib and reaching for the mobile hanging above him, this will not help to develop his coordination or motor skills. While babies may not be concerned with this, parents who want to ensure that they learn such skills at a young age will be comforted to know that baby gyms make learning such skills a byproduct of having fun and playing with toys.

The Developmental Benefits of Baby Gyms

Though your baby may only see the baby gym as a place where many toys have been organized for him, there are several developmental benefits that he will gain while he plays with the gym. His coordination and motor skills will improve as he learns to manage the different toys and activities. He can also get audio and visual stimulation, depending on the features of the baby gym.

Many baby gyms feature lights, sounds, or a combination of the two. As your baby becomes more accustomed to playing with his baby gym, the feedback will help him to develop causal learning skill. For example, it's actually a milestone for a child as he realizes that there is a pleasant sound when he presses a particular star-shaped button and realizes that he can push the button to get the sound whenever he wants.

Baby gyms can also help your child to develop physically. These gyms are, after all, very similar to the jungle gyms your child may play on when he gets older. You may not see him doing pull-ups on the baby gym, but he'll start playing with whatever objects hang above him, developing muscles and coordination as he plays.
