Baptism Suits

For the day of a baby's step into religious faith, christening gowns and baptism suits are common apparel for infants. These garments are a traditional element for the ceremonies. While gowns may be worn on both boys and girls, some parents may choose to outfit their little boy in something more distinctive of the baby's gender.

What do Baptism Suits Look Like?

A baby suit is essentially a single piece of clothing with sleeves for the arms and legs, cut to be fitting but with enough room to easily move around. The leg sleeves normally reach down to the ankles, generally with elastic around the ankles. The arm sleeves may be short or long, depending on the specific parish or personal preference. The suit might also have a collar around the neck, or a vest that comes with the outfit.

White is the traditional color for baptisms and christenings, as well as first communions and other church occasions in Western society. Religious ceremonial outfits for babies might include a headpiece as well, such as a bonnet that ties around the chin or a cap that sits on the baby's crown. Some baptism suits come packaged with a suit, bonnet, bib and blanket.

Baptism suits can be very simply cut, or detailed with pleats, buttons, bows and lace, among other unique features. A good suit uses fabric that is soft and easy to wear, such as 100 percent cotton (or a linen/cotton blend for clean and easily shaped suits) or synthetics (such as polyester or dupioni, which are suited for more elegant details).
