Dance leotards are most often worn for ballet, but they can also be worn for jazz, tap, lyrical jazz, and modern dance styles. Most ballet instructors require that students wear black leotards and pink tights for every class. This is necessary because ballet technique is very specific and ballet dancers should be uniform in their ballet performances. Ballet dancers can be original with the styles of black leotards that they choose. Leotard styles include tank, camisole, halter, criss cross, turtleneck, short sleeve, and long sleeve designs.

Dance leotards for types of dance other than ballet can be found in a variety of colors and materials. The most common materials for leotards are nylon, cotton, and Lycra. Materials such as microfiber polyester, spandex mesh, tricot, and velvet are also used for some leotard designs. Leotards may have one or many colors in matte, shiny, metallic, or printed designs.

Brands of Dance Leotards

Popular brands of dance leotards include Capezio, Eurotard, Mirella, Danskin, Bloch, and Body Wrappers. In addition to standard leotard designs, Capezio also features an ABT collection of specialty ballet leotards. Most ABT leotard styles feature striping that elongates the body and minimizes the waistline. Some styles also have a wrap front leg opening that elongates the leg line for ballerinas.

Body Wrappers began as a company that made one size fits all leisure garments. Today, the company creates a variety of leotards in tank, camisole, double strap, long sleeve, halter, empire waist, darted, v-neck, and scoop neck styles in addition to other dance wear designs. Eurotard and Mirella are well-known for making leotards from soft, comfortable and durable fabrics.
