Sperry Topsider shoes are probably the most famous and most widely-used boating shoes in existence. It's no wonder--the soles of Sperry Topsider shoes were designed specifically to prevent slippage on the deck of a boat. But Sperry Topsiders have come along way; they are now available in many different styles and shapes, all without abandoning their nautical heritage.

Variations on the Sperry Topsider

Sperry Topsider shoes were developed by Paul Sperry in the 1930s, and quickly became popular among the New England boating community. For years the shoes were only sold in a few colors, but today you can buy Sperry Topsider shoes in dozens of sizes, shapes and colors. The quality that they all share--and the trick that makes them work--is the patented Sperry rubber sole.

Most Sperry Topsider shoes are designed in a classic, nautical style. This means leather tops with white rubber bottoms. The white rubber is very useful in that it avoids marking the surface of a white boat. If you've even boarded a friend's boat with black-soled shoes, you know what a nightmare this can be.

Topsiders can be found in more classical styles, as well as modern variations for the youthful sailor. Most of them still retain the classic two-lace design. They are available in several different shades of leather: everything from black to brown to tan.
