The website Answers.com defines a curling iron as “a rod-shaped metal implement used when heated to curl the hair”. Furthermore, Dictionary.LaborLawTalk.com states that “a hair iron is a tool used to change the structure of the hair with the help of heat.” To expound on this definition a little bit, there are basically two kinds of hair irons: straightening hair irons, which are used to straighten the hair; and curling irons, which are used to make the hair curly.

Now that we know what a curling iron is, how do we decide which one is the best one for us to use? Well, it probably won’t be an easy decision to make, especially when you consider all the different models on the market. For instance, there are brush curling irons, ceramic curling irons, cordless curling irons, Marcel curling irons, steam curling irons, triple barrel curling irons and many other types.

As a suggestion, you might want to consult your checkbook prior to deciding which curling iron to purchase just to see exactly what kind you can afford. For example, the HAI 3 in 1 Ceramic Curling Iron retails for around $140 and that might be too rich for the average consumer’s blood. On the other hand the jilbere de Paris Professional Travel Iron, with a 5/8” barrel, will only set you back seven bucks.

Things to Consider When Shopping for a Curling Iron

Other things to consider are whether or not the curling iron has a quick heat up feature and an adjustable temperature dial. Variable temperature settings allow the curling iron to be used with all different hair types. Another thing well-worth having is an automatic shut-off that will turn the iron off after a certain amount of idle time.
