Silk Screening

Silk screening is a process that was developed to create designs on T-shirts. The original method takes quite a bit of time and effort to make the design template and then to do the actual painting. The first step is to make or purchase a square frame made of wood. It should be the same size as the T-shirt. A piece of sheer fabric such as silk is stretched tightly over the frame. This becomes the screen for the process.

The next step in silk screening is to prepare a thin sheet of plastic with holes in the places that the ink is supposed to show on the T-shirt. This can be done with a utility knife or an art knife. This is a demanding task because it must be precise. Once the holes are made, this sheet of plastic is placed over the sheer fabric. When this is in place, put the T-shirt on a flat surface such as a board and press the screen snugly onto the T-shirt.

Personalize with Silk Screening

Inking is the next step in silk screening. Thick ink is spread by a sponge to coat the screen. This forces the ink to flow through the screen in the design that was carved out of the plastic sheet. If the design uses several colors, the various colors are applied from the lightest to the darkest making sure the amount of ink pressed through is appropriate for the tone desired.

The current method uses equipment that can speed up the process tremendously. It is much quicker and can be done in just a matter of minutes. It is also known as serigraphy. Tracing paper can be used to produce the picture desired. T-shirts can be personalized with any message or picture. For more information, check out the Internet.
