Acne Treatment

There are any number of companies offering what they claim are miracle treatments for acne. Some are "all natural," while others are supposedly more powerful than anything you can get from a doctor in the U.S. Don't believe any of it. While it may seem like there's some sort of cruel conspiracy going on to prevent you from having the clear skin that you want, the truth is that treating acne is a slow process, and doctors are telling you the truth about the options which are ultimately most effective.

If you have acne, you should definitely see a doctor about it. The cause may be a bacterial infection that can only be treated with an antibiotic. This is the closest that you'll ever get to a "miracle cure" for acne--if you've been using drugstore products to no avail for years and then you see a doctor who prescribes an antibiotic, you may be delighted with the results that you see in a couple of weeks.

Hormones can also be a cause of acne. Among the other things that they do, hormones can tell your sebaceous glands to produce more oil than your body actually wants or needs; in the absence of fulfilling any meaningful function, it will just get clogged in your pores. Next thing you know, yesterday's makeup, the city's environmental pollutants, and dead skin cells are stuck to it and you've got acne. Some doctors will prescribe medication which affects hormone production (i.e. birth control pills), and you will find that these pills clear up acne.

Non-prescription Acne Treatments

Many people, however, have to manage their acne treatment with non-prescription products. Benzoyl peroxide to dry out the skin, salicylic acid to dissolve whiteheads and blackheads, alpha hydroxy acid to dissolve dead skin, and gentle cleansing twice each day are the basic components to self-care. You should enter into your skin care regimen only after consulting a doctor, even if you are going to be using commonly available products, as some of them may not be right for you.
