Because acne is a skin disease, acne products must contain certain active ingredients. Skin care experts agree that vitamin A derivatives, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are three ingredients which are generally safe and effective. Nonetheless, acne sufferers should consult their doctors or dermatologists for advice about the best products to take. Some popular acne medications have been linked to depression and altered mental states. As a result, one should consult a doctor to confirm that one's chosen medication has no dangerous side effects.

Active Acne Fighting Ingredients

Vitamin A and A derivatives (also referred to as Retinoids) are effective acne-fighting ingredients for many reasons. Retinoids (in appropriate concentrations) protect the skin, work as anti-inflammatories, fight bacteria, and open the pores. They also help to control sebum production. Overactive sebum production is a root cause of acne.

Salicylic acid is a mild beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). BHAs work by gently exfoliating the skin. Salicylic acid, in a two percent concentration, has been found to be extremely effective in reducing the appearance of acne. BHAs, and salicylic acid in particular, are much less irritating to the skin than alpha hydroxy acids, a necessity when dealing with already sensitive skin.

Benzoyl peroxide is the most common active ingredient used to fight mild to moderate acne. Benzoyl peroxide simultaneously kills the bacteria that causes acne and clears blocked pores. Though it can take two to three weeks to see results, it is considered highly effective and safe for people of all ages. However, it does nothing to control the underlying overproduction of sebum. Hence, the results produced by using benzoyl peroxide will go away if you stop using it.
