Cause Of Stretch Marks

The cause of stretch marks can range from pregnancy to puberty to body building. Anytime the body grows quickly, stretch marks are apt to occur. Pregnancy is the most infamous cause of stretch marks. The body gains so much weight, so quickly, and in such a specific area, that the skin simply can't stretch far enough or fast enough to keep up with it.

Stretch mark creams are essential for anyone who is putting on weight or growing rapidly. The best stretch mark creams are those creams which are loaded with elastin and collagen. Sometimes, other proteins are added to the cream, as well. Although cocoa butter is a popular home remedy for stretch marks, it actually does very little to prevent them. All cocoa butter does is keep the skin moisturized. This is helpful in preventing stretch marks, but usually not helpful enough.

The Cure and the Cause of Stretch Marks

Why is rapid growth the cause of stretch marks? Consider the skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body, as well as one of the most complex. Skin is made up of collagen, a protein which gives the skin its binding nature. Elastin is also a protein found in the skin. The protein fibers collagen and elastin give skin its elasticity, and its ability to stretch.

When skin is pushed beyond its own ability to stretch, it tears. These tiny tears are replaced with scar tissue during the healing process. This rippled, discolored scar tissue is known as striae, or stretch marks. If the skin never tears in the first place, stretch marks will never have to form. Give the skin enough elastin and collagen, and it can stretch much further than if you simply moisturized it.
