Leadership skills come into play every day in many types of organizational situations. Whether it's at a volunteer organization, among your family, or at your job, you can benefit from learning leadership skills. Here are some key traits that successful leaders possess.

First, leaders have control of themselves. You are responsible for what you think and feel, and how your actions affect others. Be consistent with your values and be aware of how others perceive you at any given moment. Second, leaders have goals. Do yours fit in with your company's? Be sure to have a plan, follow it, and update it as necessary.

Leadership Skills and Others

Leadership skills involve your team as well. You can't be a leader without followers! Nobody succeeds alone, so ask for help when you need it. If you are making changes, be sure that they are effective for your team and your company as well. Another important leader quality, often overlooked, is the ability to listen. Active listening means hearing what others have to say as well as being empathetic to their needs. Before making any decisions, really listen to what your employees are telling you.

Finally, continue to learn and grow. Don't get stuck in a rut. You must instill confidence and trust in your team, and in order to do that, they must see that you are willing to grow and change as well. In other words, walk your walk and talk your talk.
