Ergonomic ChairsWritten by Sierra Rein Ergonomic chairs are instrumental in providing office workers the ability sit in a comfortable and safe position. They are designed to be fully adjustable in height, angle, and seat depth and can include headrests, foot rests, and moveable arm rests. When used correctly, ergonomic chairs can reduce eyestrain, neck pain, back and shoulder tension, and help the seated individual retain energy throughout the day. The ideal position in an ergonomic chair is to have one's feet flat on the ground with the knees and hips at a 90° angle to the thighs (with the thighs being parallel to the ground). The backrest should be angled between 100° to 120°, while the head and neck should sit upright and forward with a support behind it. It is best if the chair is in good relation to the desk so that the hands rest comfortably on the keyboard at a downward angle, and that the wrists never have to raise themselves above the level of the elbows. How to Make Any Chair Instantly ErgonomicIf you are unable to purchase a full ergonomic chair, the best alternative is to purchase ergonomic armrests that can be attached to a normal office chair. Placing these on the chair will allow you to raise the wrists to a comfortable position, and will reduce strain and increase proper posture. Many attachable armrests also come with trays for notepads or mouse pads and trackballs. When choosing one of these arm rests, keep in mind that an incorrectly installed one can sometimes do more damage to the wrist and forearm than not having one at all. An armrest that wobbles from side to side can increase strain on the arm. Plus, make sure that the armrest you choose is made of durable ABS plastic so that is does not buckle and break under pressure.
