This is a great option for individuals who use their computers sporadically, or those who wish to switch hands every once in a while to prevent a repetitive stress disorder from developing. However, they are not recommended for long-term use, as a right-handed mouse is still ergonomically improper for a left-handed person.

Many computer manufacturers try to offer left handed people trackballs and computer mouses that are merely symmetrical in design, meaning they are equally proportioned and contain programmable buttons that can be custom-set to specific user-friendly parameters. While these mouse models are convenient and somewhat plentiful, they are usually not very ergonomic in design. It is better to choose a mouse that has been specifically designed for the left hand, especially if it takes wrist support, balance, and hand tension into account.

An Example of an Ergonomic Left Handed Mouse

The optical Quill Mouse is an ergonomic mouse that comes in both right and left-handed models. It contains a special curved area to cradle the outer edge of the hand (nearest the pinkie) and keep the hand held upright and relaxed, with the thumb held up towards the ceiling and the fingers curved around a central base. A minimum of movement from the forearm and wrist is all that is necessary to move the mouse around the mat.
