Competitive Pay

It's not always easy for a company to arrive at a competitive pay scale that will attract good employees, and at the same time, stay competitive themselves. Payroll is a huge part of any company's budget and needs to be balanced carefully in order to ensure a healthy business. Simply referring to salary surveys will not always give you the answers needed either, since pay levels vary widely from one area to another.

One sure way of getting the balance right and arriving at exactly the right level of competitive pay for your employees is to conduct a salary survey targeting workers in your particular industry and/or in your specific area. This is the only way to get it all right the first time, and it can be well worth the small investment required. Conducting a salary survey is not difficult either.

If you have neither the time nor the resources to conduct any type of survey, yet you need to set competitive pay scales in short order so that you can get your business moving, you can take steps to hire professionals to do this work for you. There are a number of companies that specialize in conducting salary surveys as well as other investigations into business efficiency for companies that need it.

Other Ways of Offering Competitive Pay

There are ways of offering competitive pay without providing a high monthly salary. Lots of companies are now offering incentives in the form of deferred pay schemes of varying sorts, stock options and even phantom stock options. Often, employees will be happy to enter into some kind of scheme that will allow them to cash in on part of their salary at a later date. This can be especially valuable to a company that is just starting out, but expecting to do a lot better as time progresses.
