Check printers can provide checks in lots of different formats. You can get checks in the standard checkbook form, with a carbon copy behind each check or you can get checks with side stubs that you fill out every time you write a check. Checks are also available in binder format so that you can better keep track of your check stubs. You can also purchase checks on larger sheets of paper with several checks on each sheet.

About Check Printing

At the bottom of each check is a series of numbers and strange characters. That line contains information about your bank and your account that check verification systems can easily read. The strange font you see is specifically designed for check verification machines to read.

That line of type is printed with magnetic ink that enables the check verification system to verify your check. This special font combined with the magnetic ink is called Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, or MICR. The MICR process is what helps banks know immediately which checks are from a credible source and which need to be reviewed.

Lots of check printers like to use soy ink on the rest of the check. This ink was introduced to the printing industry in 1987 and has been gaining momentum ever since. Soy ink is a low volatile organic compound, which means it is easier on the environment than more traditional inks. The use of soy ink can also reduce the amount of harsh chemicals that printers use to clean up their presses. Steps are currently being taken to incorporate less volatile cleaners into the soy ink printing process.
