Vehicle WrapsWritten by Nicholas Kamuda Though first popular with only large corporations and businesses, vehicle wraps are quickly becoming a favorite form or outdoor advertising among businesses of all sizes. Wraps have many strengths, including novelty, which is a powerful force among advertisements. Compared to previous forms of vehicle-based advertising, vehicle wraps can be subtler or more brazen, a versatility that advertising firms, clients, and graphic designers enjoy. Wraps are created digitally, and printed on thin vinyl sheets that have a slight elasticity. The pieces of the wrap are then cut out, and applied to the car carefully, from the rear forward. The vinyl conforms to the shape of the vehicle and doubles as a protective layer, shielding the finish of the car from rain, dirt, small rocks and the like. Advancements in Materials for Vehicle WrapsRecent advancements in both vinyl and adhesives have made vehicle wrapping an even more attractive option. For example, some newly developed adhesives are pressure sensitive, which means that even after application, they can be repositioned until pressure is firmly applied. Since, once printed, vinyl cannot be reused, installation shops have welcomed these advancements. New formulas of vinyl are also currently in use, including a semi-permeable vinyl that allows air to escape during installation. This dramatically reduces the possibility of air bubbles, which could easily develop if installation is too hasty. Other easy-on, easy-off vinyl and adhesives have also been developed, further simplifying (and reducing the cost) of vehicle wraps.
