Leadership Coaching

Leadership coaching, to many, is an oxymoron. They believe that leadership is not something that can be taught. People who conduct interviews will often say they know within the first 30 seconds whether a candidate has the ability to lead. However, often those who do have that natural leadership ability never truly learn to use it effectively. Leadership coaching can ensure that those who can lead will do so in a positive and productive manner.

A major problem in American business occurs when those who are doing the training were never trained properly themselves. Misguided managers often inadvertently pass on poor habits and ineffectual techniques. To combat this, many companies have begun to look outward for help with leadership coaching.

Hiring a Leadership Coaching Specialist

Much of leadership coaching is getting a person to understand his strengths and weaknesses. He also must acknowledge the gap between how he views himself and how others view him. Specialists can call on any number of programs, surveys, or activities to make these things clear to a client.

360 degree feedback methods allow a potential leader to see how he perceives himself and how others perceive him. Usually, a large part of this type of program is the behavioral assessment. These come in many forms, but the DISC Profile is one of the most popular. The DISC can demonstrate if one's personality demonstrates more or less of the following qualities: dominance, influence, steadiness, and (depending on the questionnaire) either compliance or congeniality. These categories are broken into ratings such as "high C" or "mid D." These terms can actually lead to an incredibly detailed report on one's "work personality." This includes a look into one's ability to lead and what type of people one will best be able to supervise.
