Training and development can take many forms in the workplace. Unfortunately, most companies have relegated training and development to a once-yearly occurrence. More often, an employee reaches a certain skill level through experience, but is never pushed to elevate his or her work beyond that point.

Training and development can not only help a staff member better understand her job, it also shows that the company has a vested interest in its workers, and this can often translate into a more committed and loyal workforce. It is important for an employee to understand her work ethic and style before she begins a development program. Many companies use assessments such as the DISC Profile to shed light on how an employee works with a team, what she wants most out of a job, and what skills she may be lacking. The DISC measures someone's leanings towards dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance (also labeled as congeniality, in some profiles). The results will clearly point out how an employee approaches work. It can also offer ways to overcome problems. If a profile suggests that someone spends too much time socializing, it may suggest that she be given very defined parameters when working on a project. If what is expected of her is made clear, she is more likely to get the work done in a timely fashion, eliminating the problem.

Committing to Training and Development

Repetition will always be a major part of training and development. The act of shooting free throws over and over should result in a player hitting a higher percentage of shots. This sports analogy can be directly applied to a saleswoman whose sales should increase as she makes more and more calls.

Simply going through the motions day after day only ensures that a team member understands what tasks must be fulfilled. It does not stimulate creativity and it does not necessarily motivate someone to go above and beyond what is required. Training and development should not be viewed as something that can be done in a few hours only to be forgotten the next day. Only by establishing a long-term goal can successful training and development be brought to fruition.
