Language conversion software is considered a necessity by many businesses, students, and multi-lingual people all over the world. Though much of it may be geared toward business use, it is equally useful for private purposes. The primary function of language conversion software is to quickly and accurately provide translations of material in one language (commonly sentences or phrases) into equivalent text in another language (called the target language).

The Two Types of Language Conversion Software

There are two main types of language conversion software, differentiated by the processes that are used to convert the source material. Machine translation software is the more direct option; it is generally quick, and is capable of producing translations of entire sentences with minimum user intervention. The drawback to machine translation is that it is often inaccurate, largely due to idioms, slang, and other colloquialisms or unorthodox grammar.

Computer-assisted translation requires more user direction than machine translation. The user must often modify of edit the source text as well as the resulting translated text. One common tactic that is used in computer-assisted translation is to produce a list of all possible translations (in order of assumed suitability) and have the user select the most appropriate option for the content of the source material.

Language conversion software that assists the user produces more accurate translations than software that provides only machine translations. It is generally considered to be more suitable to business and other professional applications than machine translation software. Moreover, many of the manufacturers of computer-assisted translation software frequently update their products with improved glossaries in a host of different target languages and technical disciplines.
