When building your own computer, the video card can be a crucial part of your system and you may want to choose very carefully when buying one. At the same time, certain computer users simply do not need an expensive, high-performance video card. Let's take a look at some of the reasons you might want to either splurge or save when it comes time to purchase a new video card.

Who Needs a Great Video Card?

Leaders in the computer video field like ATI produce a wide variety of video cards for all price ranges. The reason they do this is not simply to accommodate different budgets. To the contrary, they know that some people need more performance than others and they design their products accordingly.

The main reason for purchasing an expensive video card is that you plan on playing computer games on your new PC. If you're an avid gamer who is constantly purchasing the latest and greatest games, you know how much video performance can help or hinder game play. Most of the newer games actually require a minimum level of video performance. Dropping below this line causes the game to look choppy and slow.

Graphic designers and users of CAD software will also find it necessary to splurge on their video cards. If you're only going to be using your computer for word processing and surfing the Internet, however, a cheap ATI video card will do the trick. Watching AVI or DVD movies on your computer also does not require a high level of processing power, so don't feel like you need to spend a lot on a video card if you wish to use your computer as a video player.
