Buying a computer is a hefty investment, so smart shoppers look for ways to buy their hardware at a discount. A little online research can result in significant savings, and is well worth the additional effort. Get more bang for your computer buck by checking out all possibilities.

Refurbished Computer Hardware

One of the best ways to save money on computer systems is to buy a refurbished model. Many of the major manufacturers have a section of their sites where you can buy used laptops and desktops. Additionally, there are a great number of independent sites that sell used computers of all kinds. When you buy used, it's especially important to check the warranty.

Another good source for cheap computer hardware is the many online auction sites, of which e-Bay is the most famous. Computers offered for auction include both new and used machines. Again, you'll need to check warranties, and also the reliability rating of the seller. Shipping costs on auction sites can run high, so don't forget to take that into account.

There is a lot of variation in prices for new computers, so visiting a comparison site is an excellent idea. There are two ways to go about it. You can research the brand name home sites to decide exactly which computer you want, then go to a pricing site to see who sells it at the lowest cost. However, many of the pricing sites also allow you to make side-by-side comparisons of the hardware itself, so it may be more efficient to go there first. That way you can compare models across brand names rather than visiting each home site.
