The standardization of design forms has made it such that a manufacturing company can take a schematic design from virtually any computer-aided design (CAD) application and render it into a real, solid printed circuit board (PCB). This revolution has allowed amateurs to start designing their own fairly complex circuits. It has also enabled more experienced engineers and designers to come up with new, detailed innovations that can be configured quickly and with a great degree of ease.

Finding the Right PCB Design Software for You

When selecting PCB design software, a number of factors come into play. The most important factor is to choose a platform that will allow your workflow and creativity to be at their optimum. You don't want to be bogged down with creating a new tool library or perfunctory organizational details when you should be adding a new set of components or extended feature sets to your PCB.

Price is a major consideration when it comes to PCB design applications. Many high-end CAD programs can cost up to several thousand dollars per set. These applications usually contain superb features, though, including real-time online technical support and stellar virtual environment testing. The key is to decide whether or not you require these features; if not, you might get by using a less detailed (and therefore less expensive) application.

Some PCB manufacturing companies even distribute their own proprietary design software. If you know that you will be using a particular fabrication plant to create your circuit board, you may want to use the company's own design software, particularly because much of the time, the software is free to download and use. Check with your PCB manufacturing company to determine which software platform would be best for your own circuit board designs.
