When it comes to adding function to your computer, surface mount packages provide you with a number of excellent memory options. One option for low output microprocessors is the PLCC package. PLCC stands for plastic leaded chip carrier. This type of chip package is often used for consumer electronics, as well as for aerospace and automotive applications.

Rather than using ceramic for housing the chip package, PLCC components are made from a plastic epoxy. These components are mounted on the printed circuit board using a gold-plated contact pad. This contact pad sends the information from the chip to the microprocessor. It is essential to ensure these pads are contacting the circuit board for optimal output and signal strength.

The Advantages of Using PLCC Components

One of the drawbacks of PLCC components is limited pin capacity. PLCC sockets, unlike PGA sockets, are limited to just 84 pins per socket. When selecting a memory package for your computer or other electronic devices, it's important to consider just how much memory you need to get the job done. You can analyze this need by looking at your operating system, your usage records, and additional hardware and peripherals currently being used for your system.

There are a number of advantages to PLLC sockets and components. For one thing, the small packaging design helps to conserve space on the motherboard for additional devices. In addition, it's important to find components that are easy to install and remove. Some PLCC sockets can't be inspected once they have been installed, but you can find a number of sockets that can be reached using testing devices such as probes and clips.
