SMT or surface-mount technology is a used in electronic circuitry construction. Rather than wiring the circuit board with leads and threading them through the circuit board, SMT components are mounted directly on the printed circuit board. This relatively new system is ideal for many electronic engineering applications.

Unlike leaded systems, SMT connectors are flat contacts or short pins that are fitted onto the surface of the circuit board. The printed circuit board traditionally has copper pads at the site where the connection is to take place. These connectors are often mounted onto the circuit board using soldering paste. The board is then heated and cooled, ensuring that a permanent bond has been formed.

SMT Components for All Applications

There are a number of advantages to using SMT components for building electronic circuits. One of the main advantages is size. The components and parts are much smaller than the traditional through-hole system. In addition, this system tends to be more accurate, as the whole assembly process is automated. This helps to cut back on man-hours and human errors.

SMT components are sold according to specifications set forth by electronics industry officials. These components are sold in various shapes and sizes to meet many different electronic applications. You can find everything from passive components and Tantalum capacitors to integrated circuits, chip carriers and outline packages. You can also find ball grid array, or BGA, connectors and sockets. BGA systems use a series of solder balls to firmly attach components to circuit boards.
