The Microsoft Standard Server 2003 hosts a multifaceted design of applications and functions. It connects these applications to outside networks and systems, including Web services. Its load-handling features promote this software as ideal for smaller organizations and workgroups.

The system requirements for the Standard Server are as follows: hardware that can manage console redirection, 128 MB of RAM, 1.25 to 2 GB hard-disk space, 133 MHz processor, and a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. These requirements are basic, but it is important to note that the manufacturer recommendations for these same elements can vary. Following these guidelines can provide an outline of what type of system is requisite, but as all outlines, this must be amended depending on the specific needs of each user.

Pirated software is becoming an obstacle faced by many software development companies. Beginning with the Microsoft 2003 Standard Server, it is now a mandatory practice that users must activate all software after a purchase has taken place. This practice is necessary for both retail packaged products and new servers obtained through the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The only exception to this is found under the guidelines for licenses purchased in tandem with software acquisition, such as the Open License or Select License.

The 2003 Standard Server is designed with small businesses in mind. It functions as an efficient platform from which a directory of services can be retained, and is widely recognized for its range in applications suited for communication and partnership amongst multiple operational systems
