Anyone who is interested in learning more about information technology can find a wealth of information in the newsgroups popular among people in the industry. Newsgroups are especially helpful to people who have specific problems that they cannot solve. With thousands of accomplished people visiting the message boards every day, someone with the right qualifications is bound to see your request for help.

Newsgroups and Mailing Lists Complement an IT Education

Whether you have trouble with homework, face an obstacle at work, or need help with a personal computer, someone will offer his or her assistance if you just ask for it. When my computer was infested with spyware, I visited a popular spyware forum, explained my situation, and within an hour someone responded with step-by-step removal instructions that actually worked. Most experts enjoy sharing their knowledge.

Many IT professionals join mailing lists, one of the best ways to stay on top of industry news. It's one thing to read magazines and trade publications, but mailing lists keep people connected with their peers. Keep in mind, however, that joining a few mailing lists will result in many extra email messages. Most people find it beneficial to open a separate email account for these lists.

Newsgroups and mailing lists are definitely not substitutions for a formal education. However, joining a newsgroup or subscribing to a mailing list can definitely help any student or professional. Someone who needs assistance from others today, eventually becomes the one giving advice in the future.
