It is required by Microsoft that all devices and software must be registered by the user through a Client Accessing License (CAL). There are two categories of licensing available; the device-based and the user-based. The Standard Server with 10 CAL does not automatically initiate the Client Accessing License upon start-up. Instead, Microsoft ensures the networking of ten devices or ten users, leaving much needed room to decide which is best for the specified needs of the user. By examining what type of organizational requirements is inherent to the business, the CAL creates a platform for customizing the server system.

The Microsoft Windows Standard Server provides a secure environment from which any sized business can manage their interests. Built upon the strengths of the Windows Server 2000, the Standard Server delivers as a powerful structure, supporting computing operations and networking solutions. Through the advancements of server technology, several key features have been added to the Standard Server, accommodating the unique interests of the smaller business or organization. Some of these improvements include Common Language Runtime (CLR), additional support for online security and authentication procedures, and command-line scripting.

Server software is an evolving technology that facilitates an increasing movement towards human-to-computer communications. To illustrate this, configuration wizards are a custom feature available through the Standard Sever. This technology acts as an interface, guiding users through complicated tasks. This is normally done through the use of modal windows or dialog boxes, which appear on top of the open screen upon which the user is working.

The Standard Server provides support for plug-in systems. A plug-in acts as a resource to enhance the operations of the server. These services can include access to files, monitoring procedures, and other control functions. Acting as a mediator between the main server and the user, a plug-in customizes the server as befits the specific needs of the user, and in effect, serves to extend the parameters of what that server is capable of handling.
