Most web based businesses have long been accepting credit card payments online. By doing so they establish a quick turnaround time that is beneficial to all involved. The payment is processed quicker, reducing daily overhead, benefiting the business owner. Because the payments can be processed so quickly, the merchant has the ability to ship products to the user immediately, which both benefits the consumer and validates the site's reputation among consumers.

There are several methods that a site can utilize to begin accepting credit card payments online. Which method to use depends on factors such as the size of the business itself, the volume of transactions it expects to have, and the amount of money that will be involved. Once these are determined the site owner can begin the process of setting up the site to conduct credit card transactions.

Options for Sites Accepting Credit Card Payments Online

In order for an online business to directly accept credit card payments online, it must open a merchant account with a banking institution. After this is established, the business can choose from several options. One of the most popular options for accepting credit card payments online is the use of a gateway service. A gateway service is a third party that allows sites to process payments in real time, or through the use of an automated virtual terminal on the Internet. The virtual terminal installed on the site processes the credit card information as it is entered by the customer, and automatically conducts the transaction. Larger businesses generally find that a gateway service works best for accepting credit card payments online, but other options are available to smaller sites.

Smaller web based businesses might be better suited by the use of a remote virtual terminal. With this option, the business owner registers with a virtual terminal provider, which processes the information directly from the business rather than the consumer. A business owner can login into a virtual terminal account, and process the credit information that a customer has supplied to the site. While this may not be quite as fast as the gateway method, it allows businesses to accept payments from offline sources as well, such as the telephone.
