SSL encryption uses the Secure Sockets Layer protocol to encrypt all communication that occurs between a website's server and a customer's browser. This creates a secure environment for the online exchange of data, and protects customers against cyber-fraud and hackers. SSL encryption allows customer's to confidently patronize online businesses without having to constantly worry about their financial and personal information being appropriated by cyber-intruders.

When a user visits a site featuring SSL, their browser initiates a secure session with the site's server. The web server uses SSL encryption to transmit a unique, verifiable session key to the customer's browser. This key is then used by the browser to transmit sensitive data to the server, including credit card and bank account numbers, as well as other personal info. When the encrypted information is received by the server, it can then be decrypted using the matching key.

SSL Encryption as Industry Standard

As the strongest, most reliable protocol available, SSL encryption is the industry standard. It has become so prevalent that many online consumers will not make purchases from a non SSL encryption enabled site. They may feel like the site cannot be trusted, as it does not afford the level of authentication, validation, and data security that is offered by sites using SSL encryption

SSL encryption is so valued in e-commerce, that many online consumers will only patronize sites that utilize it. When less comprehensive methods of security are used, users know that they run the risk, however small, of being taken advantage of, either by a fraudulent business or a cyber criminal. This is why nearly all online merchants feel that SSL encryption is a necessity in maintaining good online Internet sales.
